A Father’s Warning

A Father’s Warning A Name for Emergencies Johnny gives Monica Thobela’s name and number, telling her to contact him if anything happens. He calls Thobela a phenomenon but provides little explanation. Uneasy Reassurance Monica questions why her father expects danger. Johnny insists that it is only insurance, leaving her with a warning she will understand only after the threats begin.

A Coerced Retrieval

A Coerced Retrieval The Safe and the Disk A caller tells Monica that Johnny is being held and orders her to retrieve a disk from his safe. The demand gives her little time to question the story or find another means of help. A Dangerous Choice She knows the callers may kill her father whether she cooperates or not. Her fear is real, but so is her resolve to do what she can for him.

Asking Thobela

Asking Thobela Seeking the Trusted Man Monica travels to Miriam’s home and asks Thobela to deliver the disk. She is uncomfortable intruding on his new life but trusts her father’s judgment more than her own knowledge of him. A Debt Accepted Thobela agrees because he owes Johnny. Monica’s request sets the journey in motion and makes her responsible for placing someone she barely knows in danger.

The Intelligence Interview

The Intelligence Interview A Gentle-Sounding Offer Williams questions Monica about the disk and her father, presenting the intelligence service as a possible source of help. Monica is frightened and grieving, but does not know whom to trust. A Truth with Exceptions Later, Mentz tells Monica how to answer the callers: tell the truth, except about being held by the agency. Monica follows the instruction because she fears for Johnny’s life.

The Ultimatum Returns

The Ultimatum Returns A Call from Lusaka A caller rebukes Monica for involving Thobela and renews the threat to kill Johnny if the disk fails to arrive. He claims Johnny has already been forced to talk and that the agencies are being monitored. Helpless Witness The call breaks off without reassurance. Monica has done what she can, but the rescue mission is now dependent on events beyond her control.
